Nitrogen
pollution is mainly caused by agricultural activities, whereby especially
nitrate (NO3) is emitted. In water and waste water the forms of
nitrogen of greatest interest are, in order of decreasing oxidation state,
nitrate (NO3), nitrite (NO2), ammonia (NH4),
and organic nitrogen. All these forms of nitrogen, as well as nitrogen gas
(N2), are biochemically interconvertible and are components of
the nitrogen cycle. The sum of all these nitrogen forms is called 'total nitrogen'.
Using
the TONI analyser, the efficiency of a waste water treatment plant can be
controlled and allows adjustments to the process in function of the N-signal
